I just got back from a double-conference trip, first to DrupalCon Nashville, followed mid-week by the NTEN Nonprofit Technology Conference (18NTC) in New Orleans. So here’s a recap of the DrupalCon part.
DrupalCon Nashville Nonprofit Summit
In 2017, I helped co-organize the first ever DrupalCon Nonprofit Summit in Baltimore. Molly Byrnes, Anne Stefanyk and I did it again this year in Nashville. We got feedback from the first summit that what people loved the most was breakout discussions, so we focused on making space for those in the Summit agenda.
Keynote panel on cat herding, I mean stakeholder management.
We kicked off with a keynote panel on “stakeholder management”, featuring DevCollab team member and content strategist Eileen Webb, Candice Stennett of SCORE.org, and Andrew Hanson-Dvoracek from the New England Historic Genealogical Society. Gold nuggets of wisdom were shared.

I tried to eavesdrop on breakouts when I could. They were rich, informal discussions, where org staff could ask experts and peers how they approach everything from Drupal 8 planning to security, from content strategy to putting out RFPs. My favorite was the accessibility breakout discussion led by Rachel Olivero from National Federation of the Blind. I learned why <main role=”main”> is a more helpful element than <article> for many screen reader users. Gold, I tell you.

This kind of event is my jam, because it’s the connections between nonprofit peers and colleagues that have helped me the most in my own work.
